Chapter 7 Autonomy they ask: What is it and how does the learners’ English improve?
Stacey Vye
Stacey Vye is an associate professor at Saitama University Center for English Education and Development (CEED) in Japan. Her research interests focus on exploring reflection, learner confidence, college preparation for studying abroad, and learner and teacher autonomy in language education, including the connections between both capacities. Her classroom practices are influenced by early childhood education, socio-political and economic equality, and language proficiency gains through empowerment, tutorials, and literacy development. Her personal mottos for life include being oneself, having compassion for others, reflection, and how the fields of learner and teacher autonomy are contributing to refreshing ways of learning.

埼玉大学英語教育開発センター(CEED)准教授。研究分野は自省、学習者の自信、大学における留学準備、言語教育における学習者及び教師のオートノミー、学習者と教師の二者間におけるオートノミーの関係性。教育実践の基盤としているのは自身が幼児期に受けた教育、社会的・政治的・経済的な公平性、エンパワーメント・チュートリアル・文字指導を通しての言語習得である。個人的な人生のモットーはありのままの自分でいること、他者への共感を持つこと、学習者と教師のオートノミーを革新的な学習方法の発展に役立たせること。
Fumiko Murase
Fumiko Murase is currently an associate professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in Japan, where she teaches academic reading/writing courses for undergraduate students. She obtained a PhD in Linguistics from Macquarie University, Australia, in 2010. Her PhD research focused on developing an instrument for measuring learner autonomy and investigating the multidimensionality of the construct of learner autonomy, in which she was particularly interested in the autonomy of Japanese university students learning English as a foreign language in Japan. Her main research interests include learner autonomy, self-assessment, extensive reading/listening, and out-of-class learning.
村瀬文子
東京農工大学准教授。2010年にマッコーリー大学にて博士号（言語学）を取得。博士課程では、学習者オートノミー（自律性）を測定する尺度の開発および学習者オートノミーという概念の多次元性の分析について研究し、特に英語を外国語として学習する日本人大学生の学習者オートノミー育成に関心がある。主要な研究テーマは、学習者オートノミー、セルフアセスメント、多読および多聴、授業外学習などである。
Adriana Edwards Wurzinger
Adriana Edwards Wurzinger is a historian, sociologist & social anthropologist, and an Associate Professor for the Center for English Education & Development (CEED) at Saitama University, Japan. Her research and academic courses focus on the study of English for Specific Purposes in the fields of Sociology of Identity and Human Emotions, and European History (History of Secret Societies; Pirates in History & Literature; European History of the Middle Ages; Religion, Popular Culture and the Witch-craze in Medieval and Early Modern Europe). A voracious thespian, Adriana has also coordinated and directed eleven English Drama workshops for the CEED since 2006.
アドリアナ • エドワーズ•ヴアツィンガ
歴史家、社会学者 、社会人類学者であり、埼玉大学英語教育開発センター(CEED)准教授。研究分野は社会学のアイデンティティ、人間の感情及びヨーロッパ史。それらの分野に焦点を当てた学術コース「専門分野学習のための英語学習」を展開。さらに2006 年から11回CEEDの英語ドラマ・ワークショップを開催、監督している
